In The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, it's easy to see that Sauron, his orcs, the Nazgul, and trolls are all pretty hellish creatures. And for good reason... many of them were first created by Melkor/Morgoth, who was essentially a fallen angel amongst the Valar, the earthly gods.
